The Stephen Joseph Theatre & Alan Ayckbourn

The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, is Alan Ayckbourn's home theatre. The vast majority of his plays have been premiered at the venue since his playwriting debut in 1959 and these productions are generally regarded as the definitive productions of his play - directed by the playwright himself, in-the-round with the ensemble company of his choice.

2019 At The Stephen Joseph Theatre

Alan Ayckbourn directed two productions at the Stephen Joseph Theatre during 2019, a world premiere and a revival.

Season's Greetings: The perennial favourite returns to the SJT for the first time since 1991, directed by the playwright.

Birthdays Past, Birthdays Present: The world premiere of Alan Ayckbourn's 83rd play, set around a series of birthdays party and a fiancé with a reputation that is not all it seems

Alan Ayckbourn's productions for 2020 will be announced soon.

Alan Ayckbourn At The SJT

Alan Ayckbourn is the Director Emeritus at the Stephen Joseph Theatre and directs the world premieres and revivals of his work with the company.

He first joined what was then The Library Theatre in 1957 as an actor and stage manager and was soon inspired by the company's founder, Stephen Joseph.

In 1959, Alan made his professional debut as a playwright at The Library Theatre with
The Square Cat. The success of this led to a second play in quick succession, Love After All, beginning a relationship where all but four of Alan's plays have subsequently premiered at the SJT.

In 1961, Stephen encouraged Alan into directing with a production of Patrick Hamilton's
Gaslight. Three years later, Alan would quit acting to concentrate on his directing and writing careers; although Alan is best known as a playwright, he considers himself first and foremost a director and has directed more than 350 productions.

The Library Theatre saw the world premiere of plays such as
Relatively Speaking, How The Other Half Loves, Absurd Person Singular, The Norman Conquests, Confusions and Bedroom Farce.
Stephen Joseph died in 1967 and, as his protégé, Alan took over The Library Theatre as Artistic Director in 1972.

In 1976, he oversaw the move of the company to its second home, The Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round. For the next 20 years, the company built an international reputation and Alan become indelibly associated with the company and Scarborough.

World premieres at the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round include
Taking Steps, Season's Greetings, Way Upstream, Intimate Exchanges, A Chorus Of Disapproval, Woman In Mind, Man Of The Moment, Time Of My Life and Communicating Doors.

In 1996, Alan oversaw what he considers one of his proudest achievements, the move of the company to its first purpose built home in Scarborough's former Odeon cinema.

Throughout his tenure as Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Alan remained committed to Stephen Joseph's founding principle of promoting and producing new playwriting.

In 2009, Alan Ayckbourn stepped down as Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, committing himself to continue directing and premiering his work at the venue.

He enjoys a strong relationship with the current Artistic Director, Paul Robinson, and Executive Director, Caroline Routh. In 2018, he was appointed Director Emeritus of the company in recognition of his work and achievements at the theatre

World premieres at the SJT include
Things We Do For Love, Comic Potential, House & Garden, the Damsels In Distress trilogy, Private Fears In Public Places, Neighbourhood Watch and A Brief History Of Women.
